Are You Born Again? (50 Tracts)

Sometimes when we evangelize, you may bump into someone who says they are a Christian or a follower of Jesus. But as you talk with them, it seems that they really aren't saved. This tract "Are You Born Again?" really breaks down what it means to truly be saved. Many people grow up religious or call themselves Christian, Catholic or Orthodox but truly haven't surrendered there lives to Christ through repentance and faith in Christ. Are you Born Again?

In John chapter 3 a religious teacher named Nicodemus came to Jesus because He wanted to know who He was. Jesus replied to him “…unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus didn’t understand what being born again meant. He thought that he had to be physically born again from his mother’s womb. And Jesus replies “…unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.  That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’” Going to church does not make you born again. Doing good works doesn’t make you born again. Being born into a religious home does not make you born again. So, what does being born again mean? It means you’ve been birthed new spiritual life by the Holy Spirit becoming a whole new person. You once were an enemy of God but now you are in a personal relationship with Jesus. You then have new desires, new life, and new power to obey God and resist temptation. Bringing glory to Jesus Christ in all things is your purpose in life.

Dead on Arrival

Every person is born spiritually “dead in our sins” (Ephesians 2:1). And everyone needs to be spiritually reborn into a new person. Being spiritually dead means our sins have separated us from God. But what is sin? 1 John 3:4 says “sin is lawlessness”. God’s moral law is His 10 commandments. How many lies have you told? Have you ever looked at a person with lust? Have you ever stolen? Have you loved God with all your heart perfectly? We know we are guilty sinners because we have disobeyed God’s laws. “None is righteous…no one does good” (Romans 3:10,12). And guilty sinners will end up in hell if they are not born again.   “the wages of sin is death”. Everyone needs a spiritual heart transplant and Jesus is the doctor. Our hearts are dead spiritually and we need Jesus to give us a new heart to be made alive, becoming born again.

Alive in Christ

Nicodemus was a religious teacher who knew Gods Word and worshiped God regularly. But He wasn’t born again. Ephesians 2:4,5 says “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved.” Jesus Christ died on the cross taking the punishment you deserve for all the times you have disobeyed His commandments. “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”(Romans 5:8) He was buried and then rose from the dead on the third day defeating death. God bought the world a gift called eternal life. “The free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Going to heaven, being in a relationship with God, and having your sins forgiven is eternal life. Jesus bought you this undeserving gift with His life’s blood and it’s free. This gift of grace must be received in order to make you born again. “Yet to all who did receive Him (Jesus), to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” (John 1:12,13).

Examine Yourself

The Bible says “examine (judge) yourself to see if you are in the faith”. Jesus speaking of judgement day said “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’” Many false Christians are in hell today. If you say you have always been a Christian, then you are not a Christian.  Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not enough to just “believe” intellectually that Jesus is God. The Bible says “even the demons believe and shudder.” Demons believe Jesus is the son of God but aren’t born again. There must be a point in your life where God saved and changed your life. You became a new person spiritually becoming born again. You have a physical birthdate but when was your spiritual birthdate when you became born again?

How to Become Born Again

You must first repent (confess/leave) of your sins by asking for His forgiveness. Second, you must not just simply believe with your mind but rather trust in the finished work of Christ with your heart. “If you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart God raised Jesus from the dead you will be saved.” God wants you to trust in Him with your heart that He is your Lord and Savior. Christianity is not about going through religious rituals and trying to be a good person. But rather it’s about having a relationship with Jesus. Don’t be like Nicodemus where you simply have religious head knowledge about Jesus but you have not surrendered your life to Him by faith. Humble yourself by repenting of your sin and trust in Jesus today so you become born again!  “…if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come..” 2 Corinthians 5:17
